The Col du Donon, a listed site
The highest point in the Lower Vosges
Between St-Dié-des-Vosges and Saverne, Grandfontaine lies in the Bruche valley, at the summit of the Col du Donon, more precisely at the foot of the summit of the same name, a major peak in the Vosges massif. As well as the rugged beauty of the landscape that this kingdom of Vosges fir trees has to offer, Grandfontaine is also surprisingly well worth a visit for its archaeological and historical aspects.
Visible from very far away, its location away from the usual places of occupation at an altitude of 1,009m, overlooking the Lower Vosges, has always given it a sacred character, leading to the development of legends and magical cults.
Traces of Celtic and Druidic cults can still be seen today, as can vestiges of religious ceremonies dating back to Gallo-Roman times, when the site was dedicated to Mercury. Under Napoleon III, a successful pastiche of an ancient temple crowned the summit. This temple, still visible today, is just waiting for your visit...
